Standing Stone

Jo’s fascination with standing stones and stone circles since being a teenager has led to many visits in Britain and Europe over the years. This song is about a specific one on the border between Wales and England called Cynynion, close to the constructed barrier of Offa's Dyke that marked those ancient boundaries. The song evolved from a vivid dream Jo had about standing in front of it and watching the landscape and her clothes change styles through the ages. It tells of the return to it after the dream on a cold, frosty day. After singing the song to Rick on her guitar, he decided to make it swing with a bossa nova style rhythm onto which Niall Ross added his wonderful saxophone melodies. Rick later took this song apart and stripped it back to a dub version of the song which you will hear at the end of the album called 'Everything’s Possible' which echoes the words from the chorus.

Lyrics

We inch across the frozen field
Earth shifts and cracks
Wind bites hard into our clothes
We brace our backs
Following plough lines, battling onwards
Feet now wet
The omens were clear, no arguing
Coordinates set

Everything’s possible, everything’s possible, everything’s possible,
From up here, from up here
Everything’s possible, everything’s possible, everything’s possible,
From up here, from up here

In my dreams I saw myself facing the stone
A figure beside me, holding my hand, I was not alone,
Our clothes changed styles, as era’s passed by
We stood and watched
Tracing the fissures with our hands on this ancient clock

Cos everything’s possible, everything’s possible, everything’s possible
If you believe, if you believe
Everything’s possible, everything’s possible, everything’s possible,
If you believe, if you believe

Back to the present we’re laughing now despite the cold
The sun is shining down on us a sight to behold
We look up to the sky above and catch by chance
A murmuration of starlings billowing in a perfect dance
