I am Making a Nest of my Hair

From her work as a nature poet and artist, Jo wrote this song to accompany a series of therapeutic writing workshops creating nest sculptures out of wood she collected from flayed hedgerows and storm damaged trees which incorporated found objects and written haiku poetry into the mix. The lyrics also give a nod to the folk songs of Roy Harper whom Jo and Rick both love and Anne Wood’s beautiful soaring violin additions suggest bird life close by.

Lyrics

I am making a nest of my hair
Weaving the strands together
Cocooning myself in branches of birdsong
Of moss and leaf and feather

I am spreading my flight of feathers
Feeling the air beneath me
Catching the thermals beneath my wings
And circling with the breeze

I am wrapping my cloths of protection
In thickets of ivy and hawthorn
A shimmering pillow of frothy white blossom
And armour of thistle and blackthorn

I’m invisible to the hunter
And I forage with grazing deer
I hide with the badgers as hounds pass by
And I share the fox’s fear

I am merging into the horizon
In deep cut lines and furrows
Folding my body into the scrape
Under the mound of the barrow

I am walking on ancient trackways
Of those who went before me
Etching my footprints into the earth
And communing with the trees
