Being Human

This track was written after seeing a Facebook post of a gloating fox hunter. Coupled with the news of wars and the effect of climate change, it was a challenge to respond to the sometimes overwhelming negative effects of humanity on the natural world. It’s an call for us all to do better, to be more humane, because ‘I don’t want to be that kind of human at all’. Niall Ross’ saxophones provide both stately and plangent framing to the song.

Lyrics

Being human isn’t easy
Being human is just a state of being
How do we learn to be human
How do we become more humane

Look at the red fox
Such a beautiful creature
The striped badger too
Let’s make them our teachers
Why do people think it’s fun to hunt them
Take out the hounds to drag them from their dens

Surely, we can do better
Surely, we can all be better, cos
I don’t want to be that version of human at all

I turn on the news, see the world in chaos
I turn it off and try not to think about the loss
Of lives, of homes, of trees, of species
Is being human just about servicing our own needs?

I don’t think so, I hope it’s not so
Cos, I don’t want to be that version of human at all

Peace is a place where birds sing freely
Peace is a place where water flows cleanly
Peace is a place where animals can live long
Peace is a place where children can grow strong

Why are we here? What are we doing?
We can do better
I really hope we can or we are lost
I really hope we can or we are lost

Being human isn’t easy
Being human is just a state of being
How can we learn to be human
How can we become more humane
More humane
More humane
